Frequently Asked Questions
We’ve got a pretty extensive list of frequently asked questions about RimBlades. However, if you have a question that isn’t answered here, please contact us.
What is the difference between RimBlades Original and RimSavers?
RimBlades Original were designed 7 years ago when the wheel lip was more round. The RimBlades Original have a curved design and are made of a softer rubber-like material (form fitting). RimBlades Original are great for adding color to your classic car wheels.
RimSavers are designed for today’s flat-faced wheels. They have a guide lip that makes install much easier. They are made out of proprietary rigid material that offers substantial wheel protection. The benefits include: easier install, longer lasting, strong and more impact resistant, easier to clean, and they include an optional seam clip. RimSavers are the #1 wheel rim protector on the market!
You can see a RimBlades vs. RimSavers comparison chart here.
Can I install RimBlades/RimSavers on top of a wheel that’s already been scraped or damaged?
Yes. We recommend lightly sanding the damaged area with 600 grit sand paper to smooth the rough edges. The adhesive works best on smooth, flat surfaces. You should start the install on an undamaged area so it has a strong bond at the seam.
How much protection do RimSavers offer?
RimSavers are excellent at protecting your rims from minor damage while parking. They are a layer of protection to help prevent curb damage. They can’t prevent damage caused by a pothole or any impact over 5mph. RimSavers are made from a proprietary mix of plastic and are UV stable. The construction is durable and easy to keep clean.
What product is best for Tesla vehicles?
RimSavers fit most Tesla model wheels, including Tesla Sport wheels. They offer our highest level of protection and will be the easiest to install. They can be installed with or without the Aero covers on the Model 3. RimSavers not only protect but will cover up existing damage to the outer portion of the wheel. See Photo section for pictures of them installed. RimSavers WILL NOT fit the GEMINI wheel; the outer lip is too thin.
Why should I buy RimBlades/RimSavers over similar products?
Our patented design gives our product excellent coverage and lots of surface area to “grip” your rims. It also does a good job of absorbing rim-damaging impacts, at least at low speeds.
Our top quality adhesives aren’t cheap. To be candid, adhesive is one of our largest expenses. However, rim protecting strips secured with cheap adhesive will fall off after a good rain storm. Many of the least expensive rim protection products use inferior adhesives, which is why you’ll see a lot of bad reviews for them.
Our special blend of material offers a good combination of rigidity and plasticity, allowing it to protect your rims from damage. Unlike some products – which often use basic nylon – our product can both absorb impacts and stretch.
Rim protection products shouldn’t interfere with your tires. There are quite a few rim protection products that install between the wheel and the tire. Not only are these products difficult to install, they’re often hard to keep installed. This is because neither your wheel nor your tire are designed to have a rim protector sandwiched between them. Many people who have purchased this type of rim protection device have reported tires suddenly unseating from the rim. Obviously, that’s a big problem, as a suddenly unseated tire instantly deflates, effectively becoming a flat tire.
How long will RimBlades/RimSavers last?
Assuming a careful installation that leads to a strong adhesive bond, RimBlades should last as long as your tires. Of course, if they’re damaged somehow while protecting your wheels, they should be replaced.
What happens when I need to change a tire?
It is possible to change the tire without damage to the blade. The tire shop will need to take extra care when removing the tire. Adding tire lube to the blade allows the tire to slide by without pulling the blade off. Removing tire after clip will prevent it from getting ripped off. Most tire shops are not aware of this process and will need instructions.
How do I remove RimBlades/RimSavers?
First, remove the blade. To remove the adhesive, we recommend WD-40. The trick is to apply it generously and let it sit for at least 1 hour (if possible, spray on and let it sit overnight). Use a piece of plastic or wood to scrap off adhesive. Repeat as needed and use a rag to finish. Dawn dish soap works best to remove WD-40 and any remaining residue.
You can also use our Adhesive Removal Wheel, the fastest way to remove adhesive residue without chemicals. The removal wheel is used with a drill at low speed and easily removes adhesive residue. Buy direct here.
Will RimBlades/RimSavers work on my powder-coated/clear coated/chrome/forged alloy rim?
In a word, yes. We use world-class wheel adhesive. It’s the same type of “tape” that’s been used with tape on wheel weights for decades. The adhesive will bond to any clean, smooth, flat surface.
NOTE: The adhesive is powerful stuff, but it’s not so powerful that it can’t be removed from your wheels. If any residue is left behind, WD-40 and a soft cloth will remove it without damaging your wheel finish.
Are RimBlades/RimSavers hard to install?
Not at all. It helps your back if you can get the tire up off the ground, either by jacking your vehicle up a few inches or by parking on a small ramp (like the kind used for a DIY oil change).
Making sure your wheels are clean is probably the hardest part. A clean wheel surface is crucial, as even a teeny tiny bit of silicone tire shine between the adhesive and the wheel will cause an adhesion problem. So, be sure to clean your wheels thoroughly, and then use the provided alcohol prep pads to make double certain sure they are 100% clean.
Are there any tips or tricks for making the RimBlades/RimSavers install go smoothly?
Our install tips:
- Make sure your wheels are completely and totally clean. Any dirt, moisture, or chemical (like tire shine) can cause the adhesive to fail.
- Take your time, starting at the top of the wheel and working your way around the rim. A small stool to sit on as you do this is a great idea.
- If you can lift the vehicle to get the wheel up off the ground, install is even easier. If you can spin the wheel as you install RimBlades, it’s easier to get optimum install (and easier on your back too).
- You can also install the RimBlades along the top of the wheel, roll your vehicle forwards or backwards a bit, install more, etc. This allows you to work along the top of the rim and reduce the amount of bending.
- Apply the RimBlades in a garage that’s at room temperature.
Do I need to remove my tires or break/unseat the tire bead to get RimBlades/RimSavers installed?
No. RimBlades can be installed without any tire deflation, removal, unseating, etc. Install is painless and simple.
Do I need any special tools to install RimBlades/RimSavers?
The only “tool” you’ll need is a pair of scissors or razor blade to cut the material. These are made to be installed by hand.
If I need to replace the RimBlades/RimSavers on a single wheel, can I buy enough for one wheel only?
For RimBlades Original, they only come in the entire roll; however, RimSavers can be purchased one wheel at a time. Check out RimSavers singles.
Can RimBlades/RimSavers affect my wheel balance?
No chance. RimBlades are lightweight and uniform in weight distribution along your wheel. Therefore, they will not cause any balancing issues.
Will my RimBlades/RimSavers lose their color or fade?
RimBlades do include a UV protectant. However, slight fading is normal on vehicles that are parked outside for extended periods.
Can I put my RimBlades/RimSavers thru an automated car wash?
Once the RimBlades have been installed, they must be cured for at least 3 days. After, they’ll be just fine to take thru car washes, winter storms, monsoons, and more. DAMAGE MAY OCCUR in car washes that have a guide rail. The RimBlades will protect the rim from damage but may be damaged in the process. It is advised not to use car wash systems that use a guide rail if you have low profile tires.
What’s the most expensive/exclusive/interesting car that RimBlades have ever been installed on?

- Z06 Corvettes
- Porsches
- Ferraris
- Bentleys
- SEMA show cars
